University Of Wisconsin Stevens Point Hockey

The Early Years

Early Years Of Uwsp Hockey

Since its founding in 1894, the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point (UWSP) has been known for producing top-notch athletes. It wasn't until the late 1930s, however, that the school's ice hockey program began to gain momentum. Despite the program's humble beginnings, the team quickly established a reputation for excellence, thanks to the leadership of early coaches like Walter Bachman and Tom Brown.

By the late 1940s, UWSP was a force to be reckoned with in the Midwest Intercollegiate Hockey League. In 1951, the team won its first conference championship, launching its reputation as a perennial contender. Despite a few rough seasons in the 1960s and 1970s, the team bounced back in the 1980s with the help of Hall of Fame coach Ed Ziemer.

The Ziemer Era

Ed Ziemer became head coach of the UWSP hockey team in 1979, and over the next two decades, he would become a legend in his own right. During Ziemer's tenure, the team won four national championships, nine conference championships, and made 16 NCAA tournament appearances.

But Ziemer's impact on the program went far beyond his impressive win-loss record. He was known for his tough love coaching style, his commitment to player development, and his unwavering dedication to upholding the program's proud traditions. His influence can still be felt in the program today.

But it's not just the team's success on the ice that sets it apart. UWSP hockey players are known for their academic achievements, community involvement, and commitment to sportsmanship. It's no wonder that the program has produced countless All-Americans, academic award winners, and even NHL players.
