Women's hockey has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the late 1800s. However, it wasn't until 1992 that women were allowed to play professional ice hockey. This was when Manon Rheaume became the first woman to play in a professional men's hockey game.

Manon Rheaume – Pioneer of Women's Hockey

Manon Rheaume was born on February 24, 1972, in Lac Beauport, Quebec, Canada. She began playing hockey at the age of five and was soon recognized as a talented player. In 1984, at the age of twelve, she made history when she became the first girl to play in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.

She played goaltender for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992 exhibition games against the St. Louis Blues and the Boston Bruins. She played in two periods of a game against the Blues and allowed two goals, with six saves. She played in another game against the Bruins and allowed three goals with 20 saves.

After her historic debut, Rheaume went on to play in several professional and international women's leagues. She played for the Canadian women's national ice hockey team and won two Olympic medals – a silver in 1998 and a gold in 2002.
