The FDNY hockey team was formed in 1992 after a group of firefighters decided to put together a team to play in local hockey tournaments. Over time, the team grew in popularity and began playing in games across the country. They have played in games in Canada, Europe, and even Asia. The team has also played in multiple charity games, including games to honor fallen firefighters.

In 2001, the FDNY hockey team was scheduled to play in a tournament in Calgary, Alberta. However, due to the 9/11 attacks, the tournament was canceled. Instead of staying home, the team traveled to Canada to show their support for the victims and their families. They played in multiple charity games to raise funds for the families of the fallen firefighters and police officers.
