The Mid Atlantic Women's Hockey League (MAWHL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and empowering women in sports, specifically ice hockey. The league was founded in 2003 with the mission to provide a competitive, safe, and enjoyable environment for women to play hockey.

History of the MAWHL

Mawhl History

The idea for the MAWHL originated in the early 2000s when a group of women who played hockey in the Mid-Atlantic region recognized the need for a league that catered specifically to women. They wanted a league where women could improve their skills, compete at a high level, and build lasting friendships with other women who shared their love of the game.

With this vision in mind, the MAWHL was established in 2003. The league started with just four teams and has since grown to include 10 teams from across the Mid-Atlantic region.

Structure of the League

Mawhl Structure

The MAWHL is made up of women aged 18 and over who are divided into two divisions based on their skill level - the Blue Division and the Red Division. The Blue Division is for more experienced players while the Red Division is for those who are newer to the game or who prefer a slightly more relaxed playing environment.

Each team in the league is made up of around 20 players and has a mix of forwards, defensemen, and goaltenders. The teams play a regular season that runs from October to March, followed by playoffs to determine the league champion.

Benefits of Playing in the MAWHL

Mawhl Benefits

There are many benefits to playing in the MAWHL. One of the main benefits is the opportunity to play hockey at a competitive level with other women who share a passion for the game. The league provides a supportive and inclusive environment where women of all skill levels can improve their skills, make new friends, and have fun.

Another benefit of playing in the MAWHL is the opportunity to develop leadership skills. The league is run entirely by volunteers, so there are many opportunities for players to get involved in organizing games, managing teams, and helping with league operations. These experiences can help players develop valuable leadership skills that can be applied in their personal and professional lives.

Community Outreach and Giving Back

Mawhl Community

The MAWHL is not just about playing hockey. The league also has a strong commitment to giving back to the community. Each year, the league hosts a charity game where all proceeds are donated to a local charity. In addition, many teams in the league organize their own community service projects and volunteer their time to support local causes.

Through its community outreach efforts, the MAWHL is helping to make a positive impact in the lives of others and setting a great example for women in sports.
