Women’s collegiate hockey has come a long way since its inception. In 2000, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recognized women’s ice hockey as an emerging sport. Over the years, numerous teams have dominated the women’s college hockey scene. Since the NCAA began hosting a national championship tournament, the University of Minnesota has won seven titles, making them the most successful team in NCAA women’s hockey history. Other teams that have had success include the University of Wisconsin, the University of Vermont and Boston University.
Some of the most notable players in NCAA women's hockey history include Kendall Coyne Schofield, who won two NCAA titles with Northeastern University, and Angela Ruggiero, who won four NCAA titles with Harvard University. Hilary Knight, who played for the University of Wisconsin, is also considered one of the greatest NCAA hockey players of all time. She went on to have a successful career in the National Women's Hockey League and has won multiple Olympic medals with the United States women's team.
Awards in NCAA Women's Hockey
Several awards are given out each year to recognize the top players and teams in NCAA women’s hockey. The Patty Kazmaier Award is presented to the top player in women’s college hockey, while the NCAA Most Outstanding Player award is given to the top player in the national championship tournament. The Frozen Four All-Tournament Team is compiled of the top players from each position during the tournament.
Additionally, the NCAA recognizes the best coach and the best rookie player each year. The Coach of the Year award is given to the coach who has led their team to the most success during the season, while the Rookie of the Year award is given to the top first-year player in the NCAA.
