The Ohio State Women's Hockey Team was founded in 1999, making it one of the newer additions to the NCAA. Despite its youth, the team quickly gained a reputation for excellence, thanks in large part to the leadership of head coach Jackie Barto.

Under Barto's guidance, the Buckeyes made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2001. Since then, the team has gone on to make six additional appearances in the tournament, including a trip to the Frozen Four in 2010.
