Red Wings Hockey Fights Cancer Night
October is officially recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the NHL supports this important cause with its annual Hockey Fights Cancer campaign. The Detroit Red Wings organization has always been a strong supporter of this campaign, and holds its own Hockey Fights Cancer Night each season to raise funds and awareness for cancer research.
The History of Hockey Fights Cancer
The Hockey Fights Cancer campaign was initiated by the NHL in 1998, after a year in which numerous NHL players and coaches had been diagnosed with cancer. Since then, the campaign has raised millions of dollars for cancer organizations and research around the world. Each season, every NHL team holds its own Hockey Fights Cancer game or event, with proceeds going to cancer research or charitable organizations in the team’s area.
The Detroit Red Wings and Hockey Fights Cancer
The Detroit Red Wings have always been one of the most active participants in the Hockey Fights Cancer campaign. In addition to holding an annual Hockey Fights Cancer Night, the Red Wings have also supported the American Cancer Society and other cancer organizations with fundraising and awareness events throughout the year.
Red Wings Hockey Fights Cancer Night has become one of the most anticipated events on the team’s schedule each year. The game is usually held in October or early November, and features a number of special events and activities to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Fans attending the game are encouraged to wear pink, the official color of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Red Wings players wear special jerseys with pink accents as well. These jerseys are auctioned off after the game, with proceeds going to cancer research or charitable organizations.
Red Wings Hockey Fights Cancer Night 2021
The 2021 Red Wings Hockey Fights Cancer Night will be held on November 6th, when the Red Wings take on the Boston Bruins at Little Caesars Arena. In addition to the special pink jerseys, the game will also feature a silent auction of other Red Wings memorabilia and experiences, with all proceeds going to benefit the American Cancer Society.
Other events associated with Red Wings Hockey Fights Cancer Night include the “I Fight For” campaign, in which fans can submit photos and stories of loved ones affected by cancer to be featured on the Little Caesars Arena Jumbotron during the game. There will also be a special ceremonial puck drop featuring cancer survivors and their families, as well as a “Stick Cancer” tape sale, with tape used by Red Wings players during warmups available for purchase with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
